The four-part concert cycle “Epidemics in the Mirror of Baroque Arts” reflects in music and narrative the social and societal effects of plague, cholera, consumption and syphilis.
Part II tells of consumption as a disease of the heart and a disease of the body that carried off composers such as Hans Leo Hassler and Johann Gottlieb Goldberg.
The literary point of departure is a quotation from a poem by Christian Hoffmann von Hoffmannswaldau, “Die Schwindsucht der Vernunft / so man die Liebe nennet” which, in conjunction with works of the German Baroque, takes a look at the subject that is both thoughtful and humorous.
